Gate actuator is not working – most common causes

Napęd bramy na szerokie słupki – ETM-FOLD-realizacja

Gate actuators, especially linear ones, are very popular. No wonder – they allow convenient opening and closing of the gate without effort, increasing the comfort and safety of the property. Like any device, linear actuators are not free from faults. When the gate stops opening or closing, the cause can lie in several places. The gate actuator is not working – the most common causes are worth knowing in advance. This will allow you to quickly diagnose the fault or decide whether it is necessary to call a specialist.

Table of Contents

  • Power problems
  • Mechanical drive damage
  • Electric motor failure
  • Overheating
  • Control electronics problems
  • Faults related to weather conditions
  • Lack of maintenance
  • How to avoid breakdowns?

Power problems

One of the most common causes of linear actuator failure is the lack of proper power. These problems can occur for a variety of reasons. It could be a broken cable. Mechanical damage or weather conditions can lead to a break in the power cable. In this case, the actuator stops responding. It can also happen that connectors or wires become loose. Check the condition of cables regularly, and tighten or replace damaged parts if necessary. In the event of an overload or short circuit, the fuse may blow, which will automatically break the circuit powering the actuator. This is a minor but also common fault that is easy to fix by replacing the fuse.

Mechanical drive damage

Linear actuators are a precise mechanism that drives the movement of the gate. Damage to the drive may manifest itself by slowing down operation or a complete lack of movement. The causes of this type of problems can be different. E.g. jamming of the mechanism – over time the drive mechanism can wear out, especially if it is not regularly lubricated. Friction increases the load on the motor, which can lead to its failure. The transmission should also not be forgotten. It is the element responsible for converting rotary motion into linear motion. Its failure can result from overloads or material fatigue. Replacing the gear is unfortunately complicated and often requires the support of a specialist.

Electric motor failure

The electric motor is the heart of every linear actuator, and its damage usually means that the gate cannot move. There are several reasons why the engine may stop working:

Overheating

Linear actuators are designed for short duty cycles. Too intensive use, especially without breaks, can lead to engine overheating. After reaching a temperature that is too high, the motor may turn off or become completely damaged. Another reason may be a short circuit in the circuit. This is a dangerous situation that can not only damage the engine but also pose a fire risk. A common fault is also damage to the brushes. In traditional brush motors, they wear out over time, leading to a drop in performance or a complete halt in operation. The solution is to replace the brushes with new ones.

Control electronics problems

It can also happen that the drive controller fails. One or both connectors responsible for the operation of the actuators can be damaged. The problem can also be a non-working remote control. In this situation, you can try to start the actuators through the control panel. First of all, it is worth replacing the battery in the remote control and checking if it has not decoded by chance.

Faults related to weather conditions

Linear actuators usually work outside, which means they are exposed to various weather conditions. In winter, actuators may have performance problems due to frost. The cold makes the grease inside the mechanism thicken, making gate movements difficult. Remember to properly program the operation of the control panel – most often it will be necessary to increase the overload parameters. Moisture is also of great importance. Rain and moisture can penetrate inside the actuator, causing corrosion or short circuits. Therefore, it is important that the actuator has proper sealing and is protected from precipitation.

Lack of maintenance

Lack of lubrication – this negligence leads to increased friction, which can cause motor or gear failure. It is important to lubricate the actuator according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, especially in places exposed to heavy loads.

Paradoxically, infrequent use of the actuator can also lead to its damage. Mechanisms that remain unused for a long time can jam.

How to avoid breakdowns?

A breakdown of a linear gate actuator is a problem that can result from a variety of causes – from power problems, through mechanical damage and engine failures, to problems with electronics and the impact of weather conditions. Regular maintenance, ensuring proper sealing and avoiding overloads are the basic actions that will help prevent breakdowns. In the event of a more serious fault, however, it is worth using the help of a specialist who will professionally assess the condition of the actuator and propose the best solution.
